Is It Impatience or Is It Resilience?

Is It Impatience or Is It Resilience?

As I’ve gone through my recovery from my skiing accident, I think I’ve experienced both. Now, in my sixth week and using walking braces instead of the cumbersome boots I find impatience edging its way into my thinking more and more. Finally, I will get out and drive for the first time tomorrow, I’m both excited and filled with trepidation!

I think it’s normal to be in a hurry to get back to life as I knew it. I want to be active again and I’m more than enthusiastic to get started working.  Resilience is that ability to be excited, to put a plan into action and bounce back with confidence in the outcome.

Many of us struggle with confidence in times of stress at home but succeed well with it at work. Work has a more defined set of rules and goals, whereas relationships are often more emotional and difficult to get a clear grasp of.

In both cases communication key. Being willing to be vulnerable in that communication is hard but achievable. Understanding that not everyone bounces back at the same rate, with the same communication skills or openness to share is also paramount. This is not the time to be impatient with others.

As a leader at work, you might suggest that everyone pair up at work and combine their efforts to lessen the stress. Remember that in doing so you will have to deal with personality issues but if everyone is ready to confront their fears and be willing to share the results could be spot on and lift all involved to a new level of teamwork.

With your home relationships it’s easy to become impatient and try to dominate the outcome with “at work” solutions. Bouncing back from stress in a relationship takes a different tack all together. Communication on a personal level involves more mindfulness and forgiveness to move the problem into solution mode and make both parties comfortable to be vulnerable.

I know couples who pray and meditate together to find the common ground with a problem. This brings the stress levels down, decreases emotion and allows both parties to express their fears. Help each other to be assertive and take charge of certain aspects of the problem so you work together toward the goal.

I’m trying to keep my impatience under control and bounce back in areas that are already available to me like this blog.  I’ve started making marketing phone calls for my speaking now that my energy is returning, and I should be able to start recording videos for my YouTube channel soon once I’m able to walk with confidence and set up lights, camera, etc.

You wouldn’t believe how wobbly you get when you break both ankles, the tendons, muscles, and ligaments were all stretched and need to reset and strengthen before I will be able to walk well let alone run. I’m hoping that I’ll be able to hop on my bicycle trainer and pedal soon, what a relief that will be. I’m starting to gain weight and some exercise would help me with that. Yes, I know that the afternoon Snickers isn’t helping, but eating, watching TV, and computer work is all I’ve got for now!

Well, before I start whining, I’ll sign off, so remember to take a TRIP for a lifetime, not of a lifetime.

Stay patient and resilient, and communicate with heart, and you will be fine.

In the end it’s just one man’s opinion…mine.

Teams using TRIP!
By Keith Renninson 07 Apr, 2023
This is the second in a series of four on team building with TRIP. Remember, in my last blog I shared that it would be performed in reverse with “purpose” first and now we will implement the “imagination” section. Imagination is probably the most fun of the character traits of TRIP. I love it because I can immerse myself in creativity and play!
Team building

How can TRIP help with team building you ask? By using it backwards! Huh? Yup, we will start with “Purpose” instead of Tenacity. The series will move from purpose to imagination, to resilience, and lastly to tenacity. When you look at TRIP from this reverse perspective it becomes clear that it flows naturally in team building and task completion. As with any project you must know your purpose first, so that’s where we will start.
