TRIP Tip Bonus Video #4 “Do You Set a Purpose With Your Friendships?”

Do you talk about health, wealth and happiness?

Do your friends know you care about them?

This past week a friend whom I’ve not seen much of for several years before and during the pandemic, and I got together for a bike ride.  Unfortunately, we re-connected because his father had passed away recently, and we saw each other at the memorial.

We spent a couple of pleasant hours riding, talking, and catching up.  As we did so, it seemed as though we had never had a break in our friendship, we picked up right where we left off.  Friendships like that are a joy and a blessing.
After he left, I felt refreshed and energized to go on about my day.  But it left me thinking about my purpose with friendships.  If I wanted a deeper connection with my friends, I had to be proactive about it.

The current climate in our country has become toxic for friends of different beliefs and that wasn’t always the case.  I remember my dad telling me as I was growing up, “If you want to keep your friends don’t discuss politics or religion.”  As it turns out, that was sound advice.

Today, as we all have found out, if you let your feelings on certain subjects be known you can pay a price for being vocal.  That’s wrong, everyone should have the right to their opinion if expressed in an honest and peaceful manner.

This is where I felt that if I let my friends know how much they meant to me no matter their political stance on issues then we could still like and respect each other.  My “friendship purpose” then became clear.  We have to talk about it and come to some common ground that if we had to agree to disagree on things we can’t control, we could still enjoy each other.  Sometimes easier said than done, but if you don’t try it won’t happen at all.  Friendships take work to survive.

There are a lot of important things to talk about besides politics and religion and we should try to prioritize those topics.  Like how we are staying healthy, keeping our businesses thriving, and how we are finding happiness in our lives.  These are things we can control and discuss.

To that end, actually schedule times to meet, talk and enjoy life and each other.  Let your friends know that you appreciate them no matter what you may disagree about and work to deepen the relationship.

A lot more things bring us together than separate us and that common understanding will allow your “friendship purpose” to flourish.

Remember to take a TRIP for a lifetime not a trip of a lifetime.

It’s just one man’s opinion…mine.

Cheers!

Teams using TRIP!
By Keith Renninson 07 Apr, 2023
This is the second in a series of four on team building with TRIP. Remember, in my last blog I shared that it would be performed in reverse with “purpose” first and now we will implement the “imagination” section. Imagination is probably the most fun of the character traits of TRIP. I love it because I can immerse myself in creativity and play!
Team building

How can TRIP help with team building you ask? By using it backwards! Huh? Yup, we will start with “Purpose” instead of Tenacity. The series will move from purpose to imagination, to resilience, and lastly to tenacity. When you look at TRIP from this reverse perspective it becomes clear that it flows naturally in team building and task completion. As with any project you must know your purpose first, so that’s where we will start.
